Men’s Guide to Color

As we continue to help our clients establish their own personal brand we want to bring to you the importance of the colors you wear. Whenever you are meeting a client, going for an interview, dressing for work (whether you are new or trying to establish your brand) you’ll want to keep in mind that what you are wearing says something. We will show you what each color portrays and in what situations each color should work best. When we are talking about colors, for the most part we are talking about accessories not the whole outfit. In a Professional environment stick to the light grey, charcoal and navy suit, if you are going for style have fun with these colors.

Colors: Red, Maroon, Purple & Black

Power SuitRZN,021 Maroon,Baby Blue Dots

These colors are best used as a “majority color” in a tie or pocket square. If you pair it with the power suit with the wide peak lapels and pin stripes you will maximize the look. With the power suit and tie, don’t try and upstage your boss, upstage your colleagues. You want to stand out from the competition, not show up those who will place you in a higher position. This is a major reason why we chose red as our accent color in our logo.

Who Should Wear It: CEO’s and high level professionals as well as employees in a setting with their peers.

Creative & Entertaining

Colors: Yellow, Orange, as well as bright colors

Yellow on Blue

ZST,026 180PGL28

This is tricky and a “play it by situation” scenario. Adding subtle bright colors to your outfit sparingly is a win, but when you overdo it you attract the wrong type of attention. In a professional setting use these colors sparingly, meaning hidden in a pattern in your shirt, tie or pocket square. When it’s a night out or a casual Friday feel free to incorporate a bright look to your outfit. As long as your outfit is tailored properly and you don’t look like you are trying for attention it will attract the right compliments.

Who Should Wear It: Those in creative jobs & Professionals on a night out, especially in the summer.

Colors: Blue

2eeedc765949e4d71d21b3c09ad24a24RZN,053 Navy,Silver Stripes

A great color for those who face clients who trust you with their most valued assets. Obviously your actions need to speak the loudest but to gain your clients trust you want to look the most professional and trustworthy. To do this we suggest you wear blue for all of your first meetings and keep the mood professional. Wear a blue suit, white shirt, blue tie and a different shade of blue pocket square or the essential white. Stay away from loud, bright colors.

Who Should Wear It: Those in job’s where trust is key such as the Financial Industry, Real Estate Industry, Law Enforcement & Lawyers.

Wealth & Prosperity

Colors: Green & Purple

Purple Tie Close1IMG_3563

Purple is often a color associated with royalty while green is associated with money. Those who have clients who invest this is a great color for you besides blue. Wear a bold purple tie or a quality fabric such as wool with the above mentioned colors. Don’t overdo it though, you want your clients to trust you. Make sure your clothing is tailored and you are not dressing too Gaudi.

Who Should Wear It: Those in the financial industry or for those working with clients investing either in Real Estate or another large transaction.

Colors: White & Pink

Mid GrayRZN,013 Black Pattern

Nothing says well put together than a white shirt & black tie with a white pocket square. The white shirt & pocket square are essential to any wardrobe. We suggest our clients own one of each in their wardrobe. The clean professional look helps convey safety and even trust.

Who Should Wear It: Those looking to gain trust with colleagues, clients or patients.

Summary: Never overdo a bright color unless you are in an environment where it is acceptable, but tread carefully. A navy, charcoal or light grey suit are your go to’s. From there adding colors with your tie, pocket square or dress shirt help convey the message you are trying to bring across with your outfit. The first thing your clients, colleagues, bosses, date or interviewer will see is the color you are wearing, the second is the fit of your clothing. Give that great first impression with the above advice!

Our Top 20 Style Influencer’s on IG

One thing I personally love to do is peruse Instagram and check out fashion influencer’s.  I am always finding people that have great style and I fully admit I spend too much time on Instagram in a day checking out profiles. I figured it was time to pass that knowledge on to our followers since our main goal as a Men’s Fine Fashion brand is to teach our clients how to dress professionally and/or stylishly. Without further ado, here are our top 20 favorite people on Instagram for style accounts!

20.) @DapperProfessional

The Dapper Professional has impeccable style and a complete wardrobe from the shoes to the hat. It gets even better since we have sent him two ties to be featured on his feed like our pink slim pictured above. A great page and an even greater guy.

19.) @TheDapperScientist

It blows my mind that he only has a few hundred followers. His style is daring but everything he puts together works so well, especially his signature double breasted vests. If you are looking for the confidence to try and pull off that unique style or pattern we hope The Dapper Scientist gives you the confidence you need to go for it!

18.) @DCFashionFool

We love to showcase pops of color on our Instagram feed but we could just direct you to DC Fashion Fool. His accessories are great for creating a pop of color on a neutral or staple colored suit. If you are looking to add some personality to your outfit this is where you should be looking.

17.) @ThePoshman

It’s not just his great suits, dress shirts & accessories it’s his shoes. The Poshman has a great selection of shoes to pair with his suits. If you are looking for inspiration on your full outfit check out his feed.

16.) @TheKingWoods

A lot of our clients flock to a solid colored shirt because it is easy to match with anything, if you want to branch out and learn how to pair your accessories with your shirt this is a guy to follow. He showcases a lot of different patterned shirts and matches it with other patterns or solids. A great influencer to help you expand your dress shirt wardrobe.

15.) @GasketRaynes

First off his account is hilarious, secondly his tie & pocket square game is expansive. If you want to learn how to wear that floral tie with that plaid pocket square or just need a push to risk a little with your ties follow GasketRaynes.

14.) @TheDressedChest

Great ideas on how to wear not only ties, dress shirts & pocket squares but jackets, sweaters, peacoats, top coats, turtlenecks & scarves. This account will help you dress for all seasons, especially the fall & winter.

13.) @JRyneHammons

I don’t know what else to say then he is a fantastic dresser. The patterns, the shoes, the dress shirt collars, the slim lapels, the vast collection…A great person to follow to see many different customization’s you can have on your suit or dress shirt.

12.) @M_Hoye

A unique blend of many different styles all worn with confidence. Whether it is floral pants, a cummerbund or a giant bow tie, Matt Hoye is not afraid to wear it and pull it off. I hope his account gives you the confidence to branch outside of your comfort zone.

11.) @StyleAfter50

He should own the hashtag “LifeGoals” since this is what I aspire to be “after 50“. The patterns and customization’s he chooses are worn with style and confidence. He only has a few hundred followers but we hope his account takes off as more and more people discover his account.

10.) @Meeeotch

Purple Tie Mid

Cracking the top 10 is our friend Meeeotch! Here he is wearing our purple tie from our spring collection (click the link to see his blog post about it) and wearing it well like he does with everything he owns. It doesn’t matter the color or pattern he wears in his expansive collection he matches everything impeccably.

9.) @YaosterStyle

“The Headless Mannequin” as he calls himself has the full package. He matches his pocket squares to his ties and his socks to his pocket square. Rarely do you see someone who has their whole wardrobe put together like this, and his shoe game! So many reasons to follow this account!

8.) @DogsLoveTrucks

This account wins in our books for not having belt loops on pants that are worn with suspenders. It’s that attention to detail that puts DogsLoveTrucks at number 8 on our list. An overall fantastic account from the soon to be Doctor out of Chicago.

7.) @SteveTillyStyle

Anyone who isn’t afraid to add piping to their suit has our respect. It’s not only that attention to detail that has our respect but the great selection of patterns, styles & pocket square flare. An all around great account that will motivate you whether you wear a suit for the office or personal style.

6.) @Justusf_Hansen

Since we have recently launched our topcoats this is a great account to follow but not just because of that. His fashion sense is impeccable when it comes to dressing down a suit but still staying classy and proper, but definitely keep an eye on his style when it comes to wearing a top coat.

5.) @ChrisMehan

Chris is so high on this list not only because of his suit game but his shoes. He knows how to make his whole look stand out from the crowd by adding some great shoes to it. He also has some great dress shirt patterns as well as obviously his ties and pocket squares. Stay tuned for our collaboration with him in the near future.

4.) @Dandchurch

If it’s not his brilliantly textured and pattern suits it’s because he is not afraid to mix in a red or salmon jacket every once in a while. His style is so expansive, he can and does wear anything and he makes it look great and his own.

3.) @TheDapperedGent

I strongly believe in the saying “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” The Dappered Gent is not only uniquely stylish in his own right but his friends are just as much so. His patterns, colors and style are so well put together it should encourage every man to be bold and stand out in their style. He is under 5,000 followers but deserving to be among the tops.

2.) @TheSuitedTraveller_

Now I am not going to lie, this picture of him in one of my favorite cities Porto, Portugal tilted the scale in his favor but when you peruse his account you will understand why he is ranked so high on our list. Travelling Europe has clearly taught him how to own that European style. For the business traveler this is account you must follow, it proves that it doesn’t matter if you are living out of a suitcase you can still dress your best.

1.) @ChristopherKorey

Our number one choice we recommend every follows is the one and only Christopher Korey from NYC. He not only has impeccable fashion sense but his outlook on life and inspirational posts showcase what a true Gentleman is, he truly has built a strong brand around himself. He is not only successful but motivational and stylish, which is why we have put him as our number one follow!

Honorable Mentions:

Really making a name for himself with a fantastic blog.

He usually shows his full look and it’s always brilliant! With over 150K followers he is well recognized in the fashion world and we highly recommend you give him a follow!

He has a lot of casual looks that kept him off our top 20, but when he wears suits it is always well put together including his personal grooming.

He’s comin’ up! His style game is getting stronger along his self-proclaimed “journey to become a better dresser.” Right now he has less than 100 followers, but we expect that number to grow and grow…and grow.

Now correct me if I’m wrong but I think he has started a movement with #bowtieweek. Anyone who is capable of doing that has some pull in the online fashion community. A great account to follow if you are dressing for the office or looking to be a bit more rugged on your days off.

Loving his shoe game! If you need some inspiration for creating your shoes on our soon to come online designer check his account.

Not exactly a dedicated style account but when he dresses up he defines dapper. He is also very inspirational in his posts and for those combined we suggest you give him a follow. Check his great blog post about wearing colors that every man should read.

One reason we love Johann’s profile is because of its straight forward approach. There is no clutter and it’s easy to follow and see his style. He is great at matching his ties and pocket squares and even throws in the red pants and a topcoat the odd time.

Suit Care – A Quick Rundown

We want you to get as much mileage out of your suit as possible. Here is a list of a few things you can do to make sure your suit lasts you many, many years.

1.) Use Wide Wooden Hangers

Natural wood hangers retain moisture from the garment. Make sure the hanger is also big enough to hold up the shoulders to keep the shape of the jacket. We strongly suggest a wooden hanger over a plastic or especially a wire hanger, a wire hanger will ruin the shape of the shoulders very quickly.

2.) Ventilated Garment Bag

Keep the top zipper unzipped part way and make sure it isn’t crammed into your closet. Give the suit and the garment bag some room to breathe.

3.) Dry Clean Only & Rarely

Take your suit to the dry cleaner as few times per years as possible. We’re talking about one-two times max! Only when there is visible stains for a spot cleaning or if it starts to smell. The chemicals from the dry cleaner will ruin the fabric over time so if you want to keep that great looking suit for a long time limit your visits to the dry cleaner.

4.) Never Iron or Shower Steam

We’ve heard of people putting a pocket square or cloth between the iron and the suit fabric if needed to get the wrinkles out but that is as far as you want to go. If you need to get the wrinkles out of a suit most will naturally come out after being hung from a hanger for 24 hours. You’ll see many people suggest hanging the suit in the bathroom with hot water running from the shower, don’t do it! The water vapors can actually damage the suit.

5.) Give Your Suit A Day or Two Off

Your suit needs more days off then you do. This helps it breathe and regain its shape. By mixing and matching your wardrobe throughout the week this shouldn’t be a problem. It is why we suggest at least 2-3 suits in your wardrobe.

Bonus Tips:

  • Unbutton the jacket when sitting down
  • Try not to drape the jacket over the back of a chair, hang it up or lay it down if you’re able, to keep the shape of the shoulders
  • If you gain weight over the years and the suit is getting tight, bring it to a tailor to have them let it out, otherwise you will be putting stress on the suit
  • Brush your suit to remove any debris after use

Outfit Overview #3

The Well Put Together

Let’s go straight to the windowpane suit pattern since it is very popular with our clients, if they don’t choose this pattern you can guarantee it’s in their short list. The above picture is a bolder pattern than what most people choose but it helps to illustrate the point. The windowpane pattern itself is blue, so it limits your options on what you can wear with it. Which is why most of our clients opt for a solid color suit or a white pattern instead.

Blue is the obvious best choice to pair with the suit but you can overdue it. So let’s go over the rules that were followed with this look and why it is so well put together.

  • The shirt is lighter than the tie. A good rule to follow when putting outfits together.
  • The shirt could be a solid blue color but they opted for the blue and white stripe which is further used in the rest of the outfit.
  • The blue in the shirt is a close match to the pattern on the suit, pulling the two pieces together.
  • The tie is darker than the shirt with a complimenting color. It also has white polka dots that tie (no pun intended) into the shirt and the pocket square.
  • The pocket square is the essential white that we highly recommend every Gentleman owns. It is a subtle match to the tie and even the shirt’s white stripes.

All together this outfit is very well put together with the color matching. Although we do not recommend this suit for your first, we do believe it is great once you have the essentials in your wardrobe.

The Try Too Hard

Now most of these pieces separately I don’t mind, except the bow tie unless you are a Winnipeg Blue Bombers fan it’s not my style, but all together it is too much. The attempt at muting the look with the vest was a good idea but everything else is so loud and clashing it’s hard to look at. I see this as more of a clowns wardrobe at a Bombers CFL game, but anyways, let’s move on to specifics.

  • There are 3 patterns competing in this outfit with the check suit pattern (which I love) to the striped dress shirt pattern and the bow tie. I would stick to two and opt for losing the bow tie and maybe inverting the dress shirt pattern where the white is more evident over the blue.
  • The vest was a good idea to try and bring a solid color into the look but the cream to beige color was just another addition that wasn’t needed. I would opt for pulling one of the colors out of the suit instead.
  • With those two in mind I would add a white pocket square over the blue with a simple square fold. With everything already going on to add another dynamic to the look with the pocket square folded the way it is just draws the eye again. Pick a focal point and play off of it, don’t keep adding eye catchers.
  • The bow tie needs to go and a solid color needs to be put in place of it. It brings the look down to only two patterns in the shirt and jacket which simplifies the look.

The takeaways from this look are:

  • Choose one focal point and play off of that
  • Only have 2 patterns in your look unless the third is very subtle
  • Never have patterns the same size
  • Don’t overdo it with color.

Outfit Overview #2 – Let’s Try Some Color

The other day we put up a “guide to wearing blue” on our LinkedIn page from so let’s jump right into this outfit overview with a favorite blue look of our own.

Let’s talk about matching colors. A very common color of a suit is navy blue or a tan brown. If you see our lookbook of images below you’ll see that all different types of shades of blue and brown go great together. The earth tone of the brown allows the blue to pop out, it doesn’t even have to be a bold blue such as this look where it’s an essential light blue shirt but it still stands out. It can also be a denim addition where you can pair a brown jacket with your favorite pair of jeans to create a more casual look.

If you are looking to add some new colors to your wardrobe we strongly suggest a blue and/or tan suit. Contact us for our Essentials package where we can work within your budget to ensure you have both along with a few new shirts, ties and pocket squares.

Brown & Blue Lookbook

The Red Three Piece

Red Jacket.Black Pants

Now before you jump into this look make sure you know your office dress code. We fully understand the red suit is not for everyone but we also don’t see why not. There are so many ways to wear a red suit whether you are bold enough to wear it together or you just want the subtlety of pairing it together with other parts of your wardrobe. Whatever look you choose we have you covered. Our suggestion is a three piece not so you wear it all together, that would be a bit much, but so you can mix and match it with your other suits or even your jeans.

You’ll commonly see red worn with white or black pants but a little more bold choice would be light blue pants. The red pants can be worn with a grey jacket to bring to life that commonly worn piece you may be getting a little bored of or it can also be worn with a black or white jacket. Just remember dressing well is a confidence game, wear the outfit, don’t let it wear you. Have it fit properly, stand tall and rock it.

Red Lookbook

Bold Accessories

The main reason we bring the red to your attention is not to convince you to wear a red three piece suit as your essential piece of your wardrobe. It is to be a compliment and as we said above, it’s to bring life to that suit you wear every other day. Going a little further, we have seen a lot of very stylish people add a great splash of color to their wardrobe by throwing in the red in different areas. Here are a few example of how we will help you do that, whether it is the vest, tie, pocket square, socks or even the custom lining or pattern in the suit, let’s add a little personality to your look.

Red Accessories Lookbook

Don’t try and be a hero, some Gentleman may be able to pull off the full red suit look but you really don’t need to. By pairing pieces together and accessorizing properly you will look smart and stylish. Whether it’s browns & blues, reds & whites,  or even glen plaid & herringbone, it’s time to add some depth to your wardrobe.

Let us know what your favorite color combinations are in the comments below, also don’t forget to follow us on social media for a steady stream of great looks to help you better define your style.

Yesterday we ran through suit patterns, so today let’s run through shirt patterns. Like we said yesterday a lot of customers come to us and have no idea where to start when it comes to choosing a new suit, it’s not the same with a shirt. You can’t really go wrong since shirts are easy to match to that staple suit or even a soft patterned one. But let’s run through some of your options.
